SMK Negeri 2 Pekanbaru is the oldest Technology Group Vocational School in Riau Province, which has been established since 1959 as a private school, under the name STM KARYA BAKTI.

In 1967, this school was made a state school under the name STM PEKANBARU STM, which was the only Public Middle School in Riau Province, which had 3 majors, namely the Department of Building, Machinery and Electricity. SMK Negeri 2 Pekanbaru is the oldest Vocational Technology Group in Riau Province, which has been established since 1959 as a private school, under the name STM Karya Bakti. In 1967 the school was made a state school under the name STM Pekanbaru City.

The name STM Pekanbaru lasted for several decades, until it was replaced by SMK Negeri 2 Pekanbaru in the 90s, which at that time had 5 majors, namely Building Engineering, Production Machinery, Automotive, Electronics, and Electricity.

In 1996 the school was divided into 2 schools, namely SMK NEGERI 2 PEKANBARU which is located at Jalan Pattimura No. 14 with 3 majors, namely Mechanical Engineering, Automotive, and Building, while SMK NEGERI 5 Pekanbaru which is located in tassel with 2 majors, namely Electrical and Electronics Engineering. The division of schools into 2 schools, has not been able to automatically increase the number of students accepted at vocational schools, because of the ability of majors, especially in equipment and vocational teachers. So basically the capacity of the two schools is the same as the old school.

Because the public interest in entering SMK increased from year to year, the SMK Negeri 2 Pekanbaru slowly added to the Department and areas of expertise that were possible, with basic guidelines on the results of Re-Engineering conducted by the school together with Bappeda Kota Pekanbaru. The Electrical Expertise field was reopened, with the Industrial Electrical expertise program. In the following years the department and department program has always been developed to this day. SMK Negeri 2 Pekanbaru has 2 Expertise Areas, 8 Expertise Programs with 16 Expertise Competencies.

In 2006 the Automotive Expertise Program was named the International National School, with the Advance Automotive Expertise Program. At the end of 2007 SMK Negeri 2 Pekanbaru was designated as an International Standard National School. Thus all the expertise programs in this school are recognized as schools. International Standard.

The next development at the end of 2008, programmed to become the SBI Investment Vocational School ADB, began its activities in 2010 with the additional task of guiding 3 Alliance Schools which are expected to become international standard schools in the next 4 years. In 2013 SBI Vocational School was abolished in accordance with the decision of the Constitutional Court at that time.

In 2013, the status of State Vocational High School 2 was again upgraded by the Ministry of Education and Culture through the Directorate of Vocational High School, becoming a Reference Vocational School in Riau Province. Academic Year 2013/2014, with the enactment of the 2013 curriculum, SMK Negeri 2 Pekanbaru was appointed to become the super cluster of the 2013 Curriculum Implementation which guides other SMKs in Riau Province.

For more than 4 decades since the school was made a public school, it has been led by 10 school principals plus 3 Principal Implementing Officers (PLT) held from the Directorate of Dikmenjur, Supervisors, to senior teachers at this school.
